The ultrasonic measuring system GreCon UPU 6000 detects inhomogeneities in panel-shaped materials, such as wood based panels, inline. Size and location of defective areas are recorded and visualised. Thus, defective panels can be identified and sorted out in time.
The measuring method supplies reliable results for both thick panels of up to 2.16 in [55 mm] thickness and light panels of a density of < 34.3 lbs/ft³ [550 kg/m³].
Depending on the required quality, different defect types, such as blows, that allow a graded quality sorting can be configured.

The inspection channels required for measurement are mounted on a steel frame. The design of the system is individually adapted to the material to be measured and the local conditions. The frame can be equipped with a maximum of 128 inspection channels.
The closed frame concept protects all components, such as cable and air channels, transmitter electronics or compressed air lines, against surrounding environment. A hinged mechanism protects the channels against damage from big blisters.

The UPU 6000 fs offers further benefits, such as

In the so-called ct-design, the frame construction is divided in the centre. The right and left measuring frames can be separately triggered and moved pneumatically. Thus, maintenance work can be conducted without production interruption. Even escape runs are possible, if required, to protect the channels against damage.
Ceramic transmitters are installed below the material flow. The ultrasonic signal generated by the transmitters penetrates the material and is received and evaluated by the receivers that are installed above the material flow. An attenuation of the received ultrasonic energy is registered as a deviation from the nominal value and indicates a possible weak point.
In order to protect the sound quality against disturbing influences, such as reflections, the wanted signal is protected by protection curtains.
In order to obtain good measuring results, the measuring conditions should be the same for all channels. The operator can check the function of the inspection channels and re-adjust, if necessary, by an electronic adjustment that can be conducted in panel gaps during the production
The measured panels are graphically represented in 5 or 250 colors, depending on the configuration of the system. The color balance provides information on the quality and homogeneity of the panels after pressing.
The measuring data is issued graphically and numerically:
- Alert if the tolerances are not observed
- Display of the position in which the tolerances are not observed
- Freely configurable display of numerical parameters as information on the production type or statistics.

- Display of the position and the extension of defects in 250 gradations (colours) with reference to the place on the panel.
- Clear tendency display as tachometer.
- The operator becomes aware of the current actual situation at a glance.
- Optional display of the average value, the minimum value or the maximum value.
- The DC trending informs on the homogeneity of the panel and the production process (only in case of the process optimisation option).
- The average value trending shows variations by different process influences.
- The minimum trending informs on the probability of blows.
- Freely configurable display of numerical parameters as for example information on the production type or statistics.
A clear indication of the current panel quality is the quality indicator. All measured values of a panel are compressed and represented as a quality key on a scale, similar to a speedometer.
To represent the trend of the panel quality, the maximum value, the average value and the minimum value of a panel are shown in a long-term graphic. Influences on the production process, such as moisture and temperature fluctuations or changes in production speed, are understood.
DC Long-term graphic (Deviation Control)
The DC value provides information on how homogeneous the panel was produced. The higher the DC value, the more inhomogeneous production, the higher the probability for blisters to occur. The DC value indicates technical problems with glueing, spreading, pressing, or similar upstream processes.
Use in case of sanding lines. With this function, the monitoring channels are controlled automatically so that those channels are active between which the panel moves. Including two additional light scanners to determine the panel position.
Several panels are measured in a pack. The recorded measured pack values are evaluated per panel.
Automatic recipe optimisation
The recipe parameters are determined automatically by the system control with the automatic recipe setting. It is possible to set the necessary parameters without any previous knowledge.
With this option, additional parameters, by means of which the operator can counteract the production of blisters and thus reduce the reject rate, are visualised. Instead of 5 colors that are standard, 250 colors are available for the representation of inhomogeneities of the measured panels.
For the improved resolution of measured values, a homogeneous calibration sample is automatically and mechanically placed between transmitter and receiver to be able to conduct the precise adjustment that is required for the resolution of 250 colors.
Furthermore, the system is equipped with an automatic dust accumulation control that is activated at predetermined intervals in the gap between two panels and does not disturb the measuring process. If the values of an inspection channel strongly deviate from the reference value, a warning signal is sent to the operator. If the degree of dust accumulation exceeds the limiting value, the next maintenance interval is indicated to the operator.
