GreCon BWQ 5000

Traversing inline measurement of the mass per unit area with X-ray technology

The GreCon Weight Per Unit Area Gauge BWQ 5000 ensures a high product quality while the use of raw material and energy is optimized. The properties of particleboard, MDF and OSB depend on the precise spreading of the mat. The main goal of using a BWQ 5000 is the optimization of material consumption. A heavy board is still acceptable to the end customer, but the material and production costs are much too high for the manufacturer. A board that is too light has only poor quality properties.
The BWQ 5000 monitors the material distribution of loosely spread or pre-pressed wood based mats. Graphical and numeric representations enable the operator to adjust the forming process to achieve consistent panel quality while the use of material and energy is optimized.

Benefits at a glance

  • Optimization of material consumption
  • Monitoring of material distribution
  • Fast traverse movement - quick and cross-wise measurement to proactively intervene. to quickly intervene in the production process
  • Measurement of the longitudinal profile for detection of systematic distribution failures lengthwise/crosswise
  • Automatic calibration with homogeneous test samples for best quality of measured values
  • Intuitive operation using TOUCH
  • Use of different measurement modes

Measuring method

The continuous monitoring of the mat distribution across the production prior to the main press ensures an optimum production flow. Belt tracking caused by imbalances in the mat can be prevented.
The recorded measured data makes it possible to easily trace production processes to expose optimization potentials. With the BWQ 5000 information combined with other process data in a higher-ranking process control system, additional optimization potentials are revealed.

The weight per unit area gauge works in a non-contact method. An X-ray source is installed below, and a high-precision sensor above the material. Depending on the specific density and the amount of the material, more or less X-radiation is measured by the sensor. This is a measure for the weight per unit area (kg/m² / lbs/ft²).

Automatic Calibration

The quality of the measuring results essentially depends on constant conditions during measurement. To obtain a high measuring accuracy, the BWQ 5000 is calibrated automatically at regular intervals. For automatic calibration, an appropriate sample is placed in the calibration position, which is located near the material flow.

Software Functions and Visualisation

  • The visualization is the core of the software. The recorded measuring data is collected, registered and graphically processed. The easy menu structure which is adapted to all measuring systems makes an intuitive and user-friendly operation possible.

The ergonomically designed software based on the Windows operating system allows an easy handling of the system by the operator. The recorded measured values are processed and displayed in a clearly structured way.

Thanks to the visualization software in modular design, the system can be adapted to your requirements so that the operation of the plant with different applications is possible. Furthermore the surface of the visualization software can be compiled according to your needs.

  • The measuring data is issued graphically and numerically:

    • Alert if the tolerances are not observed
    • Display of the position in which the tolerances are not observed
    • Freely configurable display of numerical parameters as information on the production type or statistics.
  • The GreCon Weight Per Unit Area Gauge BWQ 5000 can operate in three different modes. The measurement of the material distribution across the production is done in cross mode made in both directions. Should a special zone be analyzed more precisely, or, should the longitudinal profile be measured, the measurement transducer can measure in stationary mode at a certain position. Should several positions be analyzed one after the other, this is done in step mode at predetermined time intervals or at certain points on the mat.

The control software takes over all tasks which are necessary for the proper operation of the system:

    • Inspection of the measuring sensors by means of a reference sample with tolerance monitoring
    • 3 operating modes: stationary operation / step operation / cross operation
  • The system can be adapted optimally to the different requirements via recipes. The structure of the recipe management is very easy. The input of the panel-specific data enables the operator to start the measurement with only few mouse clicks. The start of a measurement and the necessary selection of a recipe make the integration of the measurement system into the process chain possible.

All default values of a production type are saved in the recipe management. Besides the production parameters, as e.g.

    • panel thickness
    • panel width
    • panel length
    • raw density
    • tolerances

also all measuring-specific parameters are filed under the production type. When the production type is loaded again, all necessary parameters are made available. all necessary parameters are made available.

    • Any panel data is stored in an SQL data base together with the recipe parameters and the measuring results.
    • Display of the position and the scope of the violated tolerances of historical panels.
    • Easy search function via date and time.
    • Export of panel data.
  • Individual time-relevant reports as e.g. the shift and month reports can be generated from the data base.

The graphic presently shown on the screen can be printed out by pressing a button. Furthermore it is possible to print out a numerical report in case of a change of the production types or the shift.

It is possible to generate different reports automatically and store or print them, as for example:

    • shift report
    • type report
    • graphic report

Furthermore it is possible to print out a screen shot of the history for statistical purposes. The data can also be exported from the history management in the standard file format XLS.
